every time I get a break from school like this I like to play some nostalgic games. Over the past two days I've re-discovered an old friend of mine - a game called Hellbender - and I'm wondering if anyone else has ever heard of it.
I feel a review coming on, so I'm going to go ahead and assume it's totally obscure.
In my opinion Hellbender is like a fusion of shooter and flight simulator. You have an arsenal of fantastic weapons (even the default weapon is cool) packed into this snazzy looking starfighter. So what if it's a little blocky? It's over then years old and unlike the Geo it still runs.
Most of the levels have objectives both above and below ground - up in the sky, it's a wild missilefest as you take on swarms of fighters and destroy targets. In the subterranian tunnels it takes quick insticts and good eyes - you can come to a stop, but there's no side-stepping in your forward-moving fighter.
There's plenty of unexpected suprises - minelayer ships, missile turrets, and collapsing tunnels all present a unique challenge. All in all it isn't terribly difficult because you can save anywhere, but this doesn't mean you'll survive everything.
The sad part is that I searched for a good hour straight today looking for a site hosting multiplayer games... well, there didn't seem to be any. In fact, as far as I can tell, there aren't even fansites of Hellbender. It makes me wonder if I am the last Hellbender fan alive... I certanily hope that's every bit as impossibe as it sounds. If you haven't played it, I reccomend trying to find the demo somewhere or check the used game shelf at electronics boutique (I live off that shelf).
And if anyone's got it already, I'll have a whole sack of cookies delivered to your quarters aboard the Amatsu.
